The appendix (vermiform appendix) is a blind tube connected to the caecum. The caecum is a pouch-like structure of the colon, located at the junction of the small and the large intestines. The appendix has been called a vestigial organ.
Appendicitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the appendix. The pain of appendicitis starts in the umbilicus and shifts to the right lower abdomen.
Symptoms
- The pain starts in the umbilicus and shifts to the right lower abdomen.
- Nausea and Vomiting
- Fever
Causes
- Obstruction of the lumen by faecolith
- Appendicular artery is an end artery so, infections are more common
Treatment
Laparoscopic Appendicectomy- Removal of the appendix
Appendicitis is a medical emergency that requires prompt surgery to remove the appendix. Left untreated, an inflamed appendix will eventually burst, or perforate, spilling infectious material into the abdominal cavity. This leads to peritonitis, a serious inflammation of the abdominal cavity’s lining (the peritoneum) that can be fatal unless it is aggresively treated with higher antibiotics and surgery. If you suspect you have appendicitis, see your doctor or go to an emergency department.
